The Great Ocean Road

We left Geelong and headed south for The Great Ocean Road. First stop Bells Beach lookout. There were a few surfers bobbing around but otherwise not much happening. I could imagine that this stretch of coastline would take quite a pounding for many months of the year, however today the sea was quite calm and a hot dry wind was blowing.
Split Point Lighthouse was our next stop. It's named split point because of the rock formation Eagle Rock which has been eroded off the headland. It is geological interesting (to me) as the base and rock platform is basalt from a volcanic eruption and you can see a distinct boundary and colour change in the sedimentary rock above. It was also a good example for S to see how erosion shapes out coastlines. Anyway, enough science.
We joined the tour of the Split Point Lighthouse (made famous from the TV show Round the Twist) but were a little disappointed that the lighthouse keeper wasn't a bearded old man. There was a great view from the top, down the coast to Lorne.
Back on the road we followed the coast road around the bends, over inlets, past beautiful beaches until we couldn't resist any longer and pulled into a secluded beach with aqua blue water for a swim. The southern ocean is always slightly cold but it was lovely to escape the hot dry wind. The kids pottered around on the sand and splashed in the waves. We could have stayed longer but wanted to make it to Aire River camp before dark.
On the way to the camp site we saw koalas in the trees! They were very close to the road and quite active as it was late in the afternoon. We're looking forward to seeing more tomorrow.
