Point Hicks lighthouse

Yesterday we drove from NSW into Victoria. We were disappointed that we couldn't see the Green Cape lighthouse because the road was still closed for control burning but we were not disappointed by Point Hicks lighthouse, and anyway, the lighthouse keeper said his was better.
It was a long drive down a dirt road into Croajingalong NP but well worth it.
The tower is the tallest lighthouse on the Australian mainland standing at 37m. It is constructed of concrete and has an amazing beautiful spiral staircase with 160 stairs. The boys enjoyed counting every one.
The lighthouse keeper did not disappoint either. With is white beard, bucket hat, King Gees and love of local history. To share just a snippet. Point Hicks was the first point on the Australian mainland sighted by Captain Cook in 1770 on his voyage back from Tahiti after observing the Transit of Venus. He then went on to map the east coast of Australia. The lighthouse was built more than 120 years ago as many ships were wrecked along the coastline.
So after our tour and an explore we were back on the road for the afternoon to Lakes Entrance to a caravan park and a shower!!
