Open Season

The first of May is official when the holiday season begins in the top end. The end of the wet. When the grey nomads begin to pack their motor homes in preparation to drive north (after Mothers' Day) for the winter. We only have a week or so until it's all on and we're fighting for 4 square metres of grass in a caravan park. Until then we're enjoying the empty highways as we cruise through the Kimberley.
The men enjoyed their 4wd today. There was a light rain in the morning, however, it didn't seem to add to the boggy patches in the road and it kept the dust down.
We were driving down the same dirt road towards Tunnel Creek so we had to go through all the mud we'd gone through the day before. There was a bit of high range and a bit of low range (whatever that means) and a lot of radio contact and we got through them all. The advice from the two old blokes in the 4wd in front of us was"straight up the guts and you'll be right", and he was right. Past Tunnel Creek there are a few river crossings which only came up to the top of the tyres but no need for the snorkel this time.
The scenery was beautiful following the Napier Range and onto Fitzroy Crossing. More of the limestone range with bloated boab trees, tussocks of spinifex, red termite mounds and white gums. I saw one playful dingo and a blue winged kookaburra!
Word of advice for travelers, stay at the Fitzroy River Lodge and caravan park, east of the river.bute best place in town and so much grass and shade!
