Limestone caving

Today we visited Stockyard Gully Reserve where there is an amazing cave along a dry river bed. The drive was not far from Sandy Cape but we needed a 4WD to drive the last few kms.
It was quite hot so we took our picnic basket down to the entrance of the cave to eat our sandwiches.
There was no water in the sandy creek bed which I was glad of as I'm sure there would have been many bees from the natural hives on the rock looking for moisture.
We had our torches and stepped into the darkness. The tunnel was quite high and wide and not at all claustrophobic but when we turned our torches off it was completely black. On we went until we saw the light at the other end of the tunnel. The tunnel is about 150m long. A bird that may have been a Boobook owl flew out near the end but we didn't see any bats.
The cave is formed by a collapsed doline when the limestone dissolves, sometimes it forms a sinkhole but this one was a tunnel and the river flowed right through it. It was amazing to see and we were the only ones there. The boys had a great time.
